Koh Rong Island:
Koh Rong Island is the second largest island in Cambodia 25km off the coast in the Gulf of Thailand. It covers approximately 78sqm with 43km of beaches.
Royal Group has a 99-year lease and will build Asia’s ‘first planned resort island’.
There are few people, dirt roads, no cars, no traffic jams and the speedboat from Sihanoukville only takes 45 minutes.
The US version of Survivor seasons 31 and 32 were filmed in Koh Rong.
Sihanoukville – nearest city to Koh Rong Island
Sihanoukville is a coastal city and capital of its namesake province. Located in the country’s southwest on the Gulf of Thailand, it is surrounded by beaches and marshlands next to Ream National Park.
The city has one navigable river, Ou Trojak Jet, running from Otres Pagoda to Otres.
Since 2016, levels of Chinese investment not seen before entered Sihanoukville and around 100 casinos opened up. In 2019 nearly 80,000 Chinese lived in Sihanoukville (90% of the expat population).
Many islands have also seen recent development. Sihanoukville is one of the cities in China’s One Belt One Road Initiative.

JICA undertook a feasibility study 2006 to 2018 and construction commenced 2019. The road starts at Phnom Penh and runs west side of NR 4 to Chbar Mon. There it crosses NR 4 and continues along its east side to Sihanoukville.
The project includes 89 bridges, 4 rest stops, gasoline stations and crash barriers to enhance safety.
US$2 billion project is a three way Public Private Partnership (PPP) project with CRBC and governments of Cambodia and China. China Road & Bridge Corp (CRBC) is main contractor.
