Cashew growing in Cambodia
In 2018, the Ministry of Agriculture signed an MoU with Vietnam Cashew Association (VCA) to bolster the production of cashews nuts.
The VCA agreed to share technology related to planting, harvesting, investment, contract farming, and research.
There are about 260,000 hectares of cashew cultivation in Cambodia which yields about 1.5T/hectare.
Now is a great time to get into cashew production.
Facts and figures:
- Cashew tree area (2020): 258,984 ha.
- Estimated harvested area (2021): 162,294 hectares
- Estimated yield of cashew nuts in 2021 in Cambodia: 1.49 tons/ha
- Estimates of yield per hectare 700 kg (can be 2,000 kg with favourable weather and grower education)
- Cambodia’s yields per hectare are similar to Indonesia and parts of East Africa

The tropical evergreen tree produces the cashew seed and the cashew apple. It can grow to 14m, but the dwarf tree (6m) is more profitable due to early maturity and higher yield. The seed (or nut) is eaten raw or roasted, cooked in dishes or processed into a cheese or butter.
The apple is light red to yellow fruit and the pulp can produce a fruit drink or distilled into liquor. Originally from Brazil, the cashew is now grown in Asia and Africa.

Smart investment in 2022 with Abode
Smart property investment is attainable if you follow some simple guidelines and the following is how foreigners can do this under Cambodia law. Abode is here to help, if you need.
There are essentially 5 smart investment options that allow for foreigners to buy property in Cambodia:
- Forming a company with a Cambodian Citizen (>50% Cambodian shareholding) with which to buy property;
- Obtaining Cambodian citizenship (see CM2H program) in Cambodia or by marriage (to buy under his / her name);
- Buy property with a Cambodian citizen’s name and putting legally protective measures in place (such as hypothee or long term lease);
- Obtaining a long term lease (<90 years); and
- Purchasing a strata title / condo property (this is the only hard title property type that can be purchased under a foreigner’s name).
The Cambodia government unveiled new foreign ownership laws related to co-owned (or shared) buildings in 2010 indicating that:
- Foreigners cannot own ground floor properties or land (soft or hard title)
- Total foreign ownership of private units must not exceed 70% of a single building or project
- Does not apply to properties <30km of national borders (some exceptions e.g. SEZ)
Good guide to investing in Cambodia
Here is a good guide to investing in Cambodia that should steer you away from total financial disaster.
The real estate market in Cambodia is extremely varied, more so than most countries, which can make investing either a smooth journey or a rocky one.
What separates a successful from unsuccessful investor is not pure luck, as many think, but the ability to recognise and avoid mistakes.
Investing in Cambodia is no different, so here are some things to consider before you part with your hard earned cash.
Research
Having a deep wallet may help you in the short term.
However, knowing where the market is now and where it is likely to go is part of a long-term strategy that will prove beneficial.
This is best attained by being aware of and finding more information on upcoming projects.
Short term gains may be made, but knowledge of the real time investment climate will more likely provide better long-term options for you.
Large upcoming infrastructure projects – roads, rail, bridges, shopping centres, subdivisions – generally nudge property values and attract businesses that will generate better investment options.
It is wise to undertake a feasibility study of your own, supported with information gleaned from professionals with a finger on the foreign investment in Cambodia pulse.
