Toul Svey Prey
Toul Svey Prey is bounded by Olympic Stadium, Mao Tse Tung Boulevard, Monireth Boulevard and Street 199. Monireth and Mao Tse Tung Boulevards, particularly during rush hour, can be congested.
It is in central Phnom Penh and has a distict urban atmosphere, close to everything and with a strong sense of community.
In the past, there wasn’t much to do here unless you want to drive, however this is changing and shops, cafes and eateries are popping up all the time.
About Prampi Makara (7 Makara):
Prampi Makara (7th January) named after the day when Kampuchean Armed Forces and Vietnamese troops liberated the capital in 1979.
It is literally central Phnom Penh with a web of narrow streets with every shop imaginable, all seemingly headed towards Orussey Market.
The real Phnom Penh, the beating heart, the raw flesh where shop owners and stall holder ply their trades.
A look up and you will see the pre-Pol Pot face of the city: the Khmer take on Modernism.
7 Makara is the smallest Khan in Phnom Penh. It has 8 Sangkats and 33 Kroms (villages) in only 2.2 km².
In 1998 had 96,192 inhabitants, making it one of the most densely populated areas in the city.
And yet, it is often overlooked.
Westerners tend to head towards Daun Penh or Chamkarmon as if nothing else matters. The Chinese appear only to want to be in BKK 1 close to Naga World.
Both ends of the investor / renter spectrum look elsewhere.
Here you can buy or rent living spaces for half the price of other areas. They will have character and the moment you step into the street, the city presents itself in its fullness.
Orussey Market watches over all – chaos by day, an eerie stillness by night.
Barely 700m north are Vattanac and Canadia Towers, 400m south west is Molyvann’s Olympic Stadium and to the immediate south BKK 1 and east, Riverside.
It is all there… waiting.
Nearby Russian Market area:
The busy districts surrounding Russian Market are some of the best in Phnom Penh for tourists and locals alike.
Its name harks back to the large Russian expat population back in the 1980s.
In the market, you will find many souvenirs, such as silk cloth and scarves from the provinces, stone Buddha carvings and other religious icons, western and local handbags and branded clothing from local factories.
Further inside is an array of fresh foods – fruit, vegetables, seafood and fish.
There are also household items like lamps, wood carvings, fabrics and kitchen wares. At night there are many restaurants serving freshly grilled seafood.
Well priced accommodation centre around the market and Wat Toul Tom Pong.
Nearby you will find many retail outlets catering to foreigners like – Zando, Sundown, Brand Collection, Corner Cafe, Vega, Brown, Starbucks and Amazon Cafe.
On virtually every corner there is a pub or bar where you can find anything from cheap beer to high-end wines and cocktails.
If you live here, you will be within walking distance to everything.
