Bassac Lane, a stone’s throw away:

Amid widespread devastation of the hospitality industry by COVID, one area in Phnom Penh seems to be defying the odds.

It includes bustling St 308 and St 21 where you will find cozy, high end bars and restaurants surrounded by new condos and other night venues.

The neighborhood is made up of groovy little streets with cool bars and eateries almost hidden away.

It is the fun area with a distinct western vibe with bars in a different theme or style to suit.

COVID-19 slowed business here but it bounced back and now the night air is filled with music as people return to their old habits.

The neighborhood is now so full of bars and hole-in-the-wall venues, that new venues are spilling into Street 308 and Street 21.

Because land prices here are 10-20% less than BKK 1, prices are cheaper all round.

Prices of food and beverages are comparatively cheap. You can find a bar selling cocktails at $3, draught beer at $1 and meals from $5.

Amidst the general activity, there is a sense of optimism despite the tight border controls keeping tourist numbers down.

So instead of going to the usual haunts on Street 136 and Pub Street that have obviously been hard hit by the pandemic, check out the lane where the night lights are a little bit brighter.

    Moving house?

Moving house – best you use a checklist as it can be a daunting task. Not only is it an emotional journey, but you’ll have reams of admin.

Here’s a checklist to help you tick off (and fill) your boxes!

Even before moving house, change your address

    • Start doing this 30 days before the move. Sometimes a phone call will do, but often you may have to provide proof of the new address to certain institutions or go into the bank, your doctor, kid’s school or Sangkat to fill in forms, so giving yourself a head start will help to shorten your to-do list.
    • In some cases you may be able to receive statements and accounts by email. This cuts down on paper wastage and ensures an easier address change process.

Some institutions you should notify, plus a few extra things

    How to minimize expenses

It makes sense to review your expenses and identify how to minimize your unnecessary spending so here are some suggestions to show you how to look after you, your finances AND the planet.

Simple tips on how to minimize expenses:

    1. Use A/C sparingly and use DRY MODE
    2. Switch to solar power where you can
    3. Turn off devices completely, instead of putting them into STAND BY mode
    4. Introduce penalties when your flat mate, partner or kids fail to switch things off
    5. Turn lights off when not needed and change to energy-saving bulbs (take them to your new home, but remember to keep and replace the old ones!)

    6. Try candlelit dinners or a BBQ with your loved one!
    7. Buy clothes that don’t need ironing. A few wrinkles never killed anyone.
    8. Go natural with hair – no straightener or dryer – or just shave it off altogether!
    9. Turn your computer off for a few days and go outside
    10. Have an Earth Hour (60 minutes with no power) every week. It could change your love life!

A detailed guide on how to minimize expenses

If you are living from paycheck to paycheck and cannot save, it could be that your income is too low or that you spend too much.

Phnom Penh Villas – a short history

Phnom Penh was an important hub for French colonialists with its wide roads, beautiful gardens, grand villas and colonial mansions earned it the undisputed title ‘Pearl of Asia’ in the 1920s.

From this time, the city expanded rapidly. Chaktomuk is located in Daun Penh; an area under transformation with countless new developments and infrastructure upgrades.

It is a culturally significant area with its landmarks like Wat Botum Park, Botumvatey Pagoda and Independence Monument and is popular for its many restaurants, cafes, embassies, NGO offices, and boutique hotels.

Riverside: the real downtown near the palace

Day and night Riverside is busy. It is probably the real downtown Phnom Penh where the oldest parts of the city are located.

I am referring to Wat Phnom, Phsar Chas, Phsar Kandal, Chey Chumneas and Chaktomuk.

Preah Sisowath (honoring King Sisowath 1904 to 1927 reign) is the avenue / boulevard running along the riverfront.

It starts at the Buddhist Institute near Sothearos Boulevard. Then continues north to the Japanese Bridge where it becomes National Road 6 leading to Battambang.

Generations of days gone by have left their footprints from Angkor kings to French colonists to UN troops.

Riverside witnesses the confluence of the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac rivers and where the Water Festival is best viewed each November.

It is always stunning, especially at sun up and sundown and you can enjoy the riverfront with a multitude of Khmers walking, dancing, exercising at all times of the day.

In Riverside, there is a wide selection of restaurants, wellbeing services, hotels, shops and bars aimed at tourists.

Among the restaurants, you will find good selections – German, Italian, French, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian and Malaysian.

A personal reflection on Riverside – gallery to market stall, $5 massages and 5-star hotels

Street 172 is punctuated with $3 massage joints and bars occupied by grey faces framed with light grey hair.

Yet, just around the corner, Street 178 is now arguably the rising art gallery district of Phnom Penh with the University of Fine Arts a stone’s throw away.

Friends Café has made a bold statement, Mansion House is undergoing reincarnation and, now the Hyatt has opened its doors to the Jet set, it may well become a different designer-schmick precinct to what is currently now.

In fact, when you look up along 172, the standard of shophouses is somewhat ‘better’ than in other parts of the city: it could be the rising star of Daun Penh and Riverside.

In the streets around Riverside, there is a sense that there are too many hostess bars, each vying for a shifting slice of the tourist and expat pie.

Rents will rise with the inevitable escalation of land values and the ROI of each vendor’s patch will become more and more critical as the clock ticks.

Looking at Phsar Kandal and the open block where Prey Sar prison once sat. one can’t help but wonder what’s coming next.

Given its proximity to Riverside and the 172 and 178 ‘sweet spot’, maybe there is something special waiting in the sidelines, something for the inspired new generation of architects and artists.

This is the dichotomy of Riverside and the attraction of opposites that makes it such an interesting place!

The neighborhood is made up of groovy little streets with cool bars and eateries almost hidden away and the fun area with a distinct western vibe with bars in a different theme or style to suit.

COVID-19 slowed business here but it bounced back and now the night air is filled with music as people return to their old habits and the neighborhood is once more full of bars and hole-in-the-wall venues spilling into Street 308 and Street 21.

Because land prices here are 10-20% less than BKK 1, prices are cheaper all round.

Prices of food and beverages are comparatively cheap and you can find a bar selling cocktails at $3, draught beer at $1 and meals from $5.

Amidst the general activity, there is a sense of optimism despite the tight border controls keeping tourist numbers down.

So instead of going to the usual haunts on Street 136 and Pub Street that have obviously been hard hit by the pandemic, check out the lane where the night lights are a little bit brighter.

    Moving apartment?

Some institutions you should notify, plus a few extra things!
